How to use Fn Keys on a laptop
The “Fn” key, short form for “Function”, is a modifier key (like the shift key) on keyboards, especially on laptops, used in a compact layout to combine keys which are usually kept separate. It is typically found on laptops due to their keyboard size restrictions. The “Fn” key is usually located on the bottom left of the keyboard and works in conjunction with a “FnLock” key.
What is “FnLock”
“FnLock” AKA Function lock, locks your function keys to be on or off, and is similar to setting Caps/Num Lock to on or off.
When your “FnLock” is set to off your F1-F12 keys will perform secondary functions (raising/lowering volume, brightness etc.)
When the “FnLock” is set to on your F1-F12 keys will perform like they would on a typical keyboard, for example pressing F5 will refresh a webpage, and alt + F4 will close an application.
It is best to leave your "FnLock" on and use the "Fn" key plus desired F1-F12 key to reach secondary functions on those keys, this will stop you from accidentally disabling Wifi or muting your microphone.
Enable and Disable “FnLock”
To enable or disable the “FnLock” you must press the “Fn” key in conjunction with the “FnLock” key.
